"Heist" Creating Big BUZZZZZ at SBIFF

It was a great day for Heist at the 2012 Santa Barbara International Film Festival! Our first screening was SOLD OUT with people being turned away. I encouraged them to return for our next screening which is Feb. 4th at 10am. Donald will be there. Sally, Hollis and I fielded great questions from the audience that was clearly pretty saavy about current events but the audience expressed over and over how Heist gave them critical new information. They applauded us for taking a very complex story yet managing to distill it down into a very clear narrative.

Post screening we attended a reception held by the Fund for Santa Barbara which has nominated Heist for its Social Justice Documentary Film award. We were blown away by the Heist buzz there! I kept getting the sense that people feel Heist is representing them, their voice and empowering them to fight back against the systemic money based corruption that is destroying our democracy. A day I will always remember!

Social Justice Award for Documentary

We are so honored that "Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?" has been nominated for the Fund for Santa Barbara's Social Justice Award for Documentary Film during the 2012 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Heist screens at SBIFF on Friday January 27 at 1p and Saturday February 4 at 10am. When Co-Director Donald Goldmacher and I first began working on the film, we knew something was deeply wrong with the country. We spent years researching and reading many books by authors who were way out in front of this crisis. Donald has a deep, personal and vast historical understanding of the importance in a capitalist system of the need for a social safety net like the New Deal which has now been all but totally eradicated by both Republicans and Democrats alike.

As a lifelong social justice activist, Donald has dedicated his life to observing, documenting and bringing about social change. His example has changed my life. As a journalist, it was constantly drilled into me to be objective and to not bring my personal politics into whatever I produced.

However, in the long process of making Heist I am proud to say that I too am now an activist and public interest journalist, truly believing in my heart that no American can afford to sit on the sidelines and allow a very small number of people to continue to destroy our middle class and democracy. As a result of the last 40 years of policy making in the U.S. a record number of Americans--nearly 1 in 2--have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income. Those in positions of power to make change are disconnected from this reality and under the ruse of the mythical free market they have shamelessly turned their backs on millions of Americans.

It is up to us to force change through whatever talents we possess. Our greatest hope for Heist is that grass roots democracy groups will use our film as an educational tool to help bring about this critically needed social and economic change.

While the Santa Barbara International Film Festival doesn't sell single tickets (except the front row just minutes before the screening begins) there is a way. Gather up your friends, buy a 4-Film MiniPak for $57 or a 10-Film MiniPak for $125 and go in a group. One hour before the screening, change your ticket for a boarding pass, er, theater pass. Seating isn't assigned, but order of entry is, just like many airlines. Then you are free to wander. Seating begins 20 minutes before the screening. One caveat: Premium package PASS holders are seated first. If you are among the last to pick up your theater pass, you could get bumped. 5 minutes before, they open 'rush' seating, $15 a pop, front row seating.

The Metro 1 seats 150: if it looks like the Jan 27 and Feb 4 screenings will sell out, they just may book a third in one of the Festival's TBA slots. Onward!

Today is "Move Your Money" day!

Today is “Move your Money” day across the globe! This is an issue directly addressed by Heist in our “solutions” section. Run don’t walk to take your money out of the big banks and put it into credit unions or community banks.

The Federal Credit Union Act was signed by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1934 to create a banking structure that would lend money to communities that really needed it because the big banks would not lend locally as a result of the Depression.

Sound familiar?

As Local First Arizona Founder Kimber Lanning points out in Heist, community banks and credit unions are “an absolutely critical component to any healthy community big or small.” Lanning goes on to say that if lending in your community is not by your community for your community then you are effectively saying “take my deposits and invest them elsewhere. We are not worthy.”

Credit unions are democratic in nature as the Board of Directors is made up of people who live and work in the community. The Board is on equal footing with depositors and is not beholden to stockholders but to members.

Moving your money to a local banking institution will go a long way to thwarting the diabolical financial system that is the target of the Occupy Movement. There are only two kinds of power in America: organized money and organized people. It’s time the people organized their money!

First three screenings of Heist - and what's next!

Hi Heisters,

We just wrapped premiering "Heist" to sold-out crowds at the 34th Mill Valley Film Festival. Organizers added a third screening due to overwhelming demand!

After spending five years making this film, we were very eager to hear audience feedback in the post-screening Q & A sessions. In our screenings, we knew we were “preaching to the choir” to some extent. But we worked very hard to make a movie that was a FACT- BASED, balanced tic-toc of the crimes against the 99% of us who have not benefited from the last 40 years of economic/ political decision making in this country.

The feedback in the post screening Q & As were both validating and enlightening. We heard over and over again comments like ”you nailed it”…”you managed to make a very difficult, dense and complex subject straight forward and easy to understand!”

Without a doubt, "Heist" got the majority of our audiences really, really angry! Many of the questions were about how and when we were getting the film to the rest of the country. Rest assured, we are working hard this week to do just that. Our biggest hope is that Heist gets it into the hands of the millions of Occupiers across the globe, helping to keep the movement alive and well.

As our "Heist" audiences now know, the 1 percent has conveniently framed the Occupy movement as one that does not have “direction." Can millions of people be wrong? Of course not but this is the “powers that be” message machine again at work. As illustrated in "Heist" widespread systemic corruption cannot be distilled down to one convenient sound bite.

"Heist" and the Class War

As illustrated in our movie "Heist," the far right, on behalf of the very rich, has been waging a war on the middle class for over thirty years. Class war is described as the tension or antagonism which exists in society due to competing socioeconomic interests between people of different classes. Throughout history class war has always been waged from the bottom up, working people versus the elite, moneyed class. We are witnessing an astonishing twist of this in the headlines today. Through co-opting Congress and the media, big money’s message machine has inexplicably managed to turn the tables and perpetuate class war from the top down—the super rich waging it on working people! Incredibly, they are crying “class war” and unfairness in response to President Obama’s proposed “Buffett tax” that will levy a tax on those individuals making 1 million or more per year. This is a political tactic by the far right to rally their greedy, trickle down obsessed and ideologically driven base.

“Heist” World Premiere!

What an incredible five-year journey it has been to create "Heist!" We are honored that “Heist” has been chosen as an official selection to the 2011 Mill Valley Film Festival. "Heist" tells a story that you won’t hear on Cable TV or read about in The Washington Post. Unlike the 24-hour news cycle, “Heist” “connects the dots” for working Americans, exposing the truth about how big money corrupted our politics and restructured the U.S. economy for its own personal gain over the last 30 years -- abandoning American workers and almost everything the United States once stood for.

We made “Heist” because there is a HUGE disconnect between what we know to be true from our own experiences in the field and in our personal lives, what we hear from our family and friends, versus what we hear the political class and the headlines telling us. For example, does anyone really think Macy’s creation of thousands of minimum wage, temporary jobs at Christmas is big news and a real solution to our tragic unemployment problems? “Heist” offers a fact-based, well-researched explanation of why so many good paying jobs with benefits have been outsourced.

We could not sit on our hands and watch House Majority Leader John Boehner create a fake debate on the budget as justification for not extending unemployment benefits. Nor were we content to sit and click as politicians on both sides of the aisle called for Social Security reform, in effect taking benefits from our elders to pay for obscene tax cuts for the super rich and unjustified wars.

In "Heist" we offer actionable solutions to the current crisis. At Mill Valley, we are so pleased to be a part of their Active Cinema program which allows us to showcase important groups that are helping to put the country back on track towards democracy and the values we all hold dear, justice and fairness.

There is great angst throughout the country and indeed the world. Our leaders have stopped listening to us so we must force them to listen through our actions. Throughout history, people power has always triumphed over hubristic politicians or a greedy, power crazed oligarchy. Look at the example of the Arab uprisings. We hope “Heist” inspires you to act as it did us. As Gandhi once said, “a good diagnosis is three-fourths of the remedy.” We now know what happened and what we are up against. Yeah, that's what it is called in the research literature. I call it being screwed by the bosses.

Is America "Up in the Air?"

I went to the movies last night to see "Up in the Air," starring George Clooney, whose job it is to fire people from other companies. He brings them the bad news, and then is back 'up in the air.' The trailer for this film suggests it is a romantic comedy, but it is actually a tragi-comedy, not only about the laid off employees( played in the film by people that were actually downsized), but about the character played by Clooney, who is clearly a person who has serious problems with intimacy and just plain feeling anything.

Having worked as a community psychiatrist, I am keenly aware of the impact of losing one's job. It is not just your job you lose, but your sense of self-worth and self-esteem, your identity, your network of co-workers, your income, and ultimately your mental stability. The mental health literature documents that most people who lose their jobs and do not quickly find a comparable paying one, often become depressed, anxious, suicidal, start abusing alcohol/drugs, and become abusive to those close to them, which often results in family breakdowns. So take a breath and imagine what is happening to those who have lost their jobs this last year, and the 30 million who lost them to outsourcing during the previous 30 years, and then ask yourself what will happen to this country when 20-30 million white collar jobs are outsourced via the internet.

Professor Alan Blinder of Princeton University wrote about this prospect several years ago,http://www.princeton.edu/~blinder/papers/06wpPreparingAmericasWorkforce.pdf and the rest of the intellectual establishment dismissed it as mere speculation. We interviewed Dr. Blinder because we knew he was dead right. When we post his interview in the coming weeks in January, I expect you will be stunned, and appropriately angry and scared. It's time to resist, my fellow citizens, and stop the destruction of this country's middle class.

After the stock market crash of 1929, there were 8 rallies over the next 3 years, but by 1932, the stock market was down 90%, and did not recover to its 1929 highs until 1954. Currently, investors who have been in the market prior to 2000, have not actually made any money. We are where we were in 2000. You would have been better off in bonds or CDs. In October, the American Bankers Association (ABA) will hold its annual convention in Chicago, which will feature appearances by conservative commentators such George Will and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. When the financiers arrive, however, a coalition of community groups and labor organizations will be there to greet them. The Chicago-based National People’s Action, the SEIU Illinois Council (which sponsors this website), and over 30 other affiliated organizations are planning a three-day demonstration outside of the gathering at which they will "demand an end to unfair predatory banking practices that enrich banks while continuing to hamper an economic recovery." From a press release:

“The nation’s top bankers need to see that working families are furious and outraged,” said Tom Balanoff, president of the SEIU Illinois Council. “The mess these bankers created continues to force working families into the unemployment line and into home foreclosures. Meanwhile, the banking industry lobby in Washington stifles efforts to stem these foreclosures. What have these bankers done to deserve the billions in bonuses so many of them received? We will not allow this convention to become a big party for the nation’s banks. They have done nothing to celebrate."

The organizers' hope is to not only mobilize Illinois and Chicago residents fed up with the banks, but also to attract outraged citizens from elsewhere in the country. The first day of the protest -- October 25 -- is still a ways off, but be sure to mark your calendar.

The forced resignation of Van Jones, who will soon be appearing in our film "Heist" is a national disgrace. Van Jones is an incredible leader, a visionary, and one who truly understands the twin disasters that have befallen us, in the form of an economic meltdown and an ecological meltdown, and how we can dig our way out of both. The vicious attacks by the Right Wing on Van are part of a deliberate strategy to make Obama's presidency ungovernable. David Brock the head of Media Matters predicted this type of scenario in his book, "The Republican Talk Machine," 5 years ago.

We have an hour long interview with Van, in which he speaks so eloquently about the demise of free market fundamentalism, and so much more. We must rally behind him, and as Alternet put it so well, recognize him as the national leader he already is.

The psychological costs of capitalism's destructiveness

I was trained over 40 years ago in the discipline of community psychiatry. One of the key things that I learned was the devastating effects of poverty on one's mental health. Several years later, a seminal work entitled"Mental Illness and the Economy," written by an economist, Harvey Brenner exposed the reality of mass mental illness caused by economic disasters such as the one we are going through now. Subsequently, an entire body of research emerged under the category of the Psychosocial Impacts of Job Loss confirming the findings of Brenner.

For the handful of mental health professionals who kept pointing out that economic recessions and depressions lead to depression, suicide, homicide, alcohol and substance abuse, family breakdown(don't forget the Right Wing "Family Values" propaganda-where are they now), domestic violence, etc., it has been a long and lonely battle.

Another psychological aspect of the transformation of the American economy to a banana republic, is the political acquiescence of the populace. How long this will continue is hard to predict, but we should read our history books to learn that it does take time to form social movements that can overthrow the tyranny of financial oligarchies.

We had the privilege of interviewing the President of the United Steelworkers, Leo Gerard, one of the most progressive labor leaders in the US, who really explains the class war unleashed by the Right Wing when Ronald Reagan took power in 1981. Following the events of September 2008, it is evident that Wall St. is still in control of our government. The Obama appointments are to say the least disappointing. We do not expect this economy to revive any time soon. Best to hunker down, buy lots of beans and grains, and work like hell for progressive political change.

Many people have just lost a good deal of their retirement $$, as well as part of the value in their homes, which were over-inflated due to the housing bubble created by Wall St. Now they are wondering what can they do with their remaining money.

As in the 1920s, for the past 25 years the stock market was allowed to become a casino, made inevitable by the deregulation ideology of the free market fundamentalists, beginning with Ronald Reagan’s regime, and continuing to the present.
